You know how we all have those dreams? The ones you would think would never come true? This one was Jess’. We were sitting in the kitchen- cum- office one morning when the phone rang. Jess answered. It was Laureen Roussow. I didn’t know this but I could tell she was completely frazzled. “Oh my! What an honour” I heard her say. Who could it be I wondered? Jess got off the phone and let out an excited shrill! “THAT WAS LAUREEN ROUSSOW! She wants us to come and meet with her tomorrow to talk about featuring us in the Spring Issue!”
An onslaught of singing and dancing and outfit-planning to ‘Blurred Lines’ commenced. This literally was our professional dream come true, not to mention Jess’ lifelong dream!
We arrived at the meeting soaking wet from the pouring rain outside, not knowing what to expect. Laureen was straight to the point. She wanted US to arrange flowers for the soon-to-be-released Spring Issue. US! JESS AND I! SUPERNATURAL FLORAL DESIGN. Our little love project that had only been borne 7 months before!
A flurry of sketching and planning commenced. We decided not to use many store bought flowers. Spring had come early and the flowers in private gardens around Cape Town were looking absolutely beautiful. Magnolias were in full bloom, as were fruit blossoms and ranunculas. The day before the shoot, we trawled around Claremont and Constantia, ringing people’s doorbells to ask them whether we could forage a few flowers from their garden, and many of them were very obliging. What a way to make new friends!
The day of the actual shoot is a bit of a blur. The whole experience felt somewhat euphoric. We had a small space to arrange on, and were handed these vases, each of which must have cost more than our months rent. There were two shoots happening that day on either side of the studio. Laureen and her team kept it cool whilst the interns scurried around, ironing out fabric, making tea, and, like in the case of the gorgeous Chisanga Mukuka, ended up modelling an impromptu headpiece for us! It was a long day which went by incredibly quickly. When it was all over, we packed up our van and drove to town to celebrate with a glass of wine and an armful of hugs and high-fives.
A day that will never be forgotten! Thank you Elle Decor for believing in us.
